Title: Mental Ray Experiment
Client: Self
Media: 3D Lighting / Material Experiment
Software: 3DS Max, Mental Ray Renderer

Project Summary

I made a shiny gold teapot the other day using 3d Studio max and Mental Ray. I was experimenting with different materials using the Mental Ray render engine. Tutorial will be coming soon, check for it at my 3D Tutorial site, 3dRockstar.com.

Some other materials I played around with:

Simple metal accomplished with an architectural material and raytracing.

Glass material accomplished by using refraction

Shellac material blended with a slight glow lume

This material was created using a glow lume and refraction

The fuzzy teapot material is a combination of a falloff diffuse map and the hair modifier

  1. I think the last one was left out a little too long…lol.

The quality of the gold texture on the top one is great – how long did that take to render?

Thanks Brandon. Well I have dual quad-core processors, so it took less than a minute per frame. I don’t think it would take too much longer on a lesser, but still powerful, machine.

Best 3D teapots I’ve ever seen

I like the dark metal one (#2). The 1st one looks great but I’m more impressed with your lighting. It has a very natural feel.

Why can’t I get the image of hairball tea out of my head now?
    ;)

    Chris,

Great idea. I have been learning Mental Ray as well and experimenting with all of the settings. Mental Ray is a great renderer for max and allows Max scenes to achieve film quality realism similar to V-Ray. It took me a few days to really “get it” so a set of tutorials on this is an excellent idea. Please include a basic tutorial on setting up the environment and lights.

I like the glass one. Light refractions are a puta to calculate when emulating light physics. Gives me flashbacks

  8. Carlos says:

Great study on materials. Thank you! Will you be experimenting with materials that resemble car paint anytime soon?

  9. HyperNinja says:

Thanks for your input guys. I plan on creating a tutorial like Dan had mentioned on how to set up a lit scene to use with mental ray as well as how to create the some of the materials. There is also a car paint shader I was messing with, but it was coming out too splotchy. I think the paint flakes were too dense. As soon as I get a good paint material, I will post that on my 3D site.
