Words to Live by in 2009

As 2009 approaches, I’m sure no doubt that many people will come up with the typical New Years resolutions. Quit smoking, lose weight, diet, and go to the gym more often. Typically, most people do not keep their resolutions, though gym memberships and attendance will skyrocket in January, by March, the gym is usually back to its normal pace.

Death Metal Scares Me

In the spirit of Halloween, I thought I would write about one of the many things that scare the crap out of me. I’m not talking about clowns, giant death hornets or that creepy guy who is way too eager to spot you doing pull ups in the gym . I’m talking about Death Metal. Enter Cory.

Cory, is a good friend of mine, but I have to say, my first impression of him made me more nervous than an Asian girl any girl at a LAN party. He was as staggering 10′8” mammoth of a man. He stormed into our office brandishing a hunting axe that even Gimli the dwarf king of Middle Earth couldn’t forge. “Cory want PHP Developer Job” he proclaimed as he demanded the job and threatened to burn our village down if we did not comply. After he got the job, he ripped the door off and snapped it in half as he asked “What time should I come into work on Monday?” to which I responded “Please just don’t kill me”.

That next Monday he introduced me to the “music” genre of Death Metal. Eager to appease the giant, I shared with him my love for such bands a Tool, NIN, and A Perfect Circle. “What are you some kinda nancy-boy?” asked Cory. We then listened to something what I can only describe as demons torturing demon cats while other demons murder zombie demons in the background… plus lots of technical drumming. Turns out we were listening to a band called “Cannibal Corpse” which made sense. It was very close to what I had imagined in my mind but instead, the zombie demons were eating the regular demons. At this point, my body kicked into survival mode as I slowly removed my Coldplay album from my desk and strategically placed it in the trash can.

Over the last year or so, I have gotten to know Cory fairly well, and all joking aside he is a good guy. We no longer work together but I try to keep in touch with him as much as possible. If going to see a band called “Amputation” at venue called “The Dungeon” sounds like a good time, then I urge you to check out FloridaDeathMetal.com, which is a site that Cory had put together in which he shares his passion. I commend him for that. I did however see a a Kenney Chesney album in his itunes. He will blame his wife but I know better.

UPrinting.com Wants Me to Give You Free Business Cards

UPrinting.com gave me 1000 free business cards to give away. I was going to keep some for myself but I figured I know enough freelancers and independent workers who would benefit much more than I would from some free business cards. UPrinting seems legit, they have been around fro 25 years and they do full color printing and offer not only business cards printing but other products such as flyers, postcards and hang tags. I haven’t personally seen their print quality, but you can get free samples. Also it’s free, so I wouldn’t really complain.

How to get the free cards

I am going to divvy them up between 4 readers, 250 cards each. All you have to do is comment on this post and tell me why you deserve or need free business cards. Make me laugh. Get creative. Some examples could be:

1. Ninjas attacked me, and stole all my business cards.
2. The economy sucks right now and I’ll take anything for free.
3. I found the ninjas that stole my business cards, but they won’t give them back because they are ninjas, so I need some more.

Ill choose the four winners at the end of November, this way you can have one more thing to be thankful for.

When Geek Meets Gangsta…

…you get this. Yes folks, this is probably the most geekiest thing I have every bought in my life. And where do you find such Star Wars geekery? Marc Ecko. For those of you who can’t tell, yes, this is a Storm Trooper sweatshirt that zips completely over your head. This is hands down the BEST investment I have ever made.

Puppies…

I had a friend recently write about some really cute kittens he rescued so I was inspired and thought I’d take the opportunity to share my two favorite puppies, Rocky and Yasmine. Rocky (Husky/Corgi Mix) is my dog and and Yasmine (Shitzu) is my friend Jason’s dog. While Jason was staying with me for a couple weeks, we cleared an area in the living room I like to call “The Puppy Bowl”. This is what we had to look forward to. For hours…

Messing with Marc Cenedella from The Ladders

theladders logo

So during my job search, I decided to sign up for TheLadders.com. For those of you who don’t know what that is, it’s like monster but for 100K plus jobs only. As a joke, I signed up thinking I might be able to land me a CEO position somewhere with oh, all 5 whole years of industry experience in graphic design making over 100K. That would be awesome! Here is where TheLadders get crappy. They basically use bait and switch tactics (threw some link love to cheezhead.com for the interesting insight), which allows you to search for those jobs, but to apply for those jobs; you have to pay $30. Lame.

3d Robot Ninja

A while ago I built the Hyperninja in 3D. I built a low poly version, only 1265 polygons, and just used a diffuse map with the texture. I built this in a crunch, but I plan on building a higher res version eventually.
